Insufficient: additional criminal count tacked on for ex-priest

Six criminal counts were not enough.

That number of criminal charges proved to be insufficient to accurately encompass the collective acts of sexual wrongdoing committed by an ex-Catholic priest in Michigan against vulnerable and trusting minors.

Michigan criminal authorities rectified that shortcoming earlier this week by slapping 80-year-old Vincent DeLorenzo with an additional first-degree charge of Criminal Sexual Conduct (CSC). The count relates to the heinous act of sexually assaulting a young adolescent back in 1987 after conducting a funeral service for the survivor's family.

This is not the first time that DeLorenzo has featured in our blog posts. The former Lansing priest was one of five ex-clerics charged by state Attorney General Dana Nessel this past May with multiple egregious acts of wrongdoing against underage survivors. We related that story in a July 17 White Law blog entry.

Among other charges, DeLorenzo now faces four first-degree CSC counts. Each of those charges brings the potential for a life term in prison.

Nessel and her office vow to be diligent and exacting as their probe against wrongdoers progresses. Nessel notes the "millions of pages of [potentially incriminating] documents" that Michigan law enforcers have seized from state dioceses. She believes they contain evidence of "years of crimes that were originally swept under the rug."

Michigan survivors of sexual abuse committed by clerics or other individuals are far from powerless in responding. Experienced and empathetic survivors' rights attorneys can help them take a proactive, aggressive and materially empowering stance in response, even if wrongdoing occurred years back.

We welcome contacts to our firm from individuals who seek proven legal advocacy regarding the above subject matter.
