MI diocese releases list of "credibly accused" sexual abusers

Doesn't it seem reasonable that individuals given the titles of Parochial Vicar, Chaplain, Pastor and Sacramental Minister would collectively comprise a group of trustworthy individuals?

Those formal designations conferred by the Catholic Church are linked with a number of long-time clerics who commanded positions of noted responsibility in the church. The cited officials led congregations, counseled church attendees, presided over important life events and administered sacraments.

For decades, too, they sexually abused the most vulnerable of all demographics. Namely, that is young people who looked up to them and trusted implicitly in everything they said and did.

We spotlighted one of those individuals in recent blog posts at the proven Michigan pro-survivors' advocacy firm of White Law in Okemos. We chronicled in some detail the sad tale of former Lansing Diocese priest Vincent DeLorenzo in our September 26 post. We noted therein the multiple acts of criminal sexual conduct he committed over many years while being a cleric.

The diocese now merits further scrutiny in the wake of its public disclosure last Friday spotlighting a lengthy list of priests (DeLorenzo included) it states have been credibly accused of sexual abuse over the years. That long compilation includes multiple references to individuals with the above-cited vicar, minister and other impressively titled appellations.

Church officials cite myriad factors deemed relevant to establishing a "credible" claim. What likely emerges most notable for many people considering church rationale is that Catholic authorities deem it their sole prerogative to assess what is or is not credible.

The public has seen the unfortunate results of that analysis many times in the past. Moreover, it knows that methodical and dispassionate work done by law enforcers and diligent survivors' attorneys is far more conducive in promoting truth in such matters.

We welcome contacts to our firm from individuals wishing to speak confidentially and with candor to proven legal advocates concerning a sexual abuse matter. Our goal always is to promote empowerment/healing and secure maximum compensation for criminal wrongdoing.
